Confined spaces
This energy type is present. This tool does not calculate it.
Atmosphere, not structure, is the main killer in confined spaces. Oxygen depletion and toxic gas give no visible warning, and would-be rescuers become casualties without a plan.
Trigger questions
- Is the space genuinely required to be entered, or can the work be done from outside?
- Is entry controlled by a permit with a named authoriser?
- Has the atmosphere been tested before entry and continuously during work?
- Is a trained attendant at the entry point for the whole entry?
- Is a rescue plan in place that does not rely on calling emergency services alone?
Controls to verify

Some energy cannot be reduced to a simple field calculation. Where this energy is present in the work, treat it as high energy: the decision is made by presence, not arithmetic. Use the trigger questions and competent-person verification instead of a number.
