Radiation: trigger questions and direct controls

Ionising sources used in NDT and non-ionising sources such as welding arc and lasers injure without contact. Exposure is controlled by distance, time, shielding and exclusion.

Trigger questions

Is radiographic testing planned in or near the work area?
Are exclusion distances for the source established and marked?
Is arc flash from welding shielded from other trades?
Are laser or RF sources present that require specific controls?

Warning signals are agreed and understood by surrounding trades.

Some energy cannot be reduced to a simple field calculation. Where this energy is present in the work, treat it as high energy: the decision is made by presence, not arithmetic. Use the trigger questions and competent-person verification instead of a number.
