Trenching
This card shows the energy in this activity and what to verify before starting. It's a reference, not a step-by-step procedure. The checklist below stays on this screen; nothing is saved or sent.
Trenching creates long open excavations with collapse exposure and repeated entry by operatives.
High-energy check
Treat unsupported trench sides as high energy. Collapse happens without warning and half a metre of soil can pin a person.
Trigger checks
-
Mechanical
Moving parts, tools, tension, rotation or stored mechanical force.
-
Sound
Harmful noise or impulse sound.
-
Confined spaces (deep excavations)
Atmosphere, not structure, is the main killer in confined spaces. Oxygen depletion and toxic gas give no visible warning, and would-be rescuers become casualties without a plan.
Direct controls to verify
Ticks stay on this screen only. Nothing is saved or sent.
For your SPA or pre-start
State the support or battering method, the entry points, the spoil distance from the edge and who inspects the trench before each entry.
